Allele vs gene

Genes come in multiple forms, or versions. Each of these forms is called an allele. Traits are characteristics that can be passed from one generation to another.

Except in some viruses, genes are made up of DNA, a complex molecule that codes genetic information for the transmission of inherited traits. So, what it is the difference between a gene and an allele ?

The short answer is that an allele is a variant form of a gene. One gene possibly has two alleles. An the allele can be either a dominant allele or a recessive allele.

The below infographic shows the difference between gene and allele as a side by side comparison. A gene as a stretch of DNA on a chromosome. Alleles as versions (sequence variants) of a gene. Examples of genes are pores and pores and skin shade, eye shade and blood type.

When it comes to genes verses allele , how many of us can say for certain what the difference is?

An allele refers to the different versions of the same gene. Allele is a sequence of DNA nonetheless locus serves as a marker. For example, your eye color is determined by one gene. As nouns the difference between allele and haplotype is that allele is (genetics) one of a number of alternative forms of the same gene occupying a given position on a chromosome while haplotype is (genetics) a group of alleles that are transmitted together.

As a verb haplotype is (genetics) to characterize with respect to haplotype. For the same gene , any alleles whose DNA sequence differs from the wild type allele is the mutant allele. A mutant allele contains modified genetic information (different DNA sequence), often encodes an altered gene product (RNA or protein), and may produce a different phenotype. Locus is used specifically to locate the position of chromosome on a gene. Both genes and alleles are responsible for the genetic make-up of a life.

They encode the instructions for the development, functioning, and reproduction – the different traits of an individual. Summary – Allele vs Locus. Genes are sequences which are found on chromosomes. Allele and locus differ with each other even though alleles locate at loci. On the other han the locus is a specific location on a chromosome where a gene situates.

Therefore, the allele is one possible form of a gene. The main difference between allele and locus is that allele is an alternative form of a gene whereas locus is the position of an allele in the chromosome. Alleles arise by mutations and can be found in the same locus of the homologous chromosome pair.

If they are heterozygous, then one allele would be dominant and the other would be recessive. Alleles are responsible for different phenotypic expression of the same trait, for example, eye color. Difference between Gene and Allele. To put it into simple terms: Locus is simply the location on a chromosome where a specific gene is found.

The key difference between gene and allele is that a gene is a stretch of DNA which determines a specific trait and an allele brings variations to a single trait. All genes are found on a designated place on every chromosome of an organism. However, not every copy of a gene is identical.

A heterozygous allele is a bit more complicated then homozygous allele. This is the currently selected item. Mechanisms of evolution. Practice: Hardy-Weinberg. Genetic drift, bottleneck effect, and founder effect.

Definition: Gene is a segment of DNA coding for a functional protein. Exact present day definition of gene is “It is a segment of DNA coding for functional protein, rRNA, tRNA and ribozymes”.
